Xbox President Sarah Bond has revealed that a delay in the Epic vs. Google lawsuit has pushed back the original timeline for enabling direct game purchases via the Xbox app. The feature, which was initially slated to roll out for Android users in November, has been delayed due to a recent court decision.

In October, the outcome of Epic Games' antitrust lawsuit against Google led to the Android giant being mandated to implement several changes aimed at promoting fair competition. One of the key rulings requires Google to allow third-party app markets on its Play Store starting November 1, 2024, for a three-year period. Following this, Bond announced that Xbox would enable game purchases on the Xbox Android app in November. However, as the original launch date approached, the feature failed to appear, prompting Bond to explain the delay.

On Bluesky, Bond attributed the postponement to an "administrative stay" issued by the court to Google. She clarified that the Xbox team had completed its work and the feature was "ready to go live," but they were waiting for the court’s "final decision." Bond emphasized Xbox's eagerness to provide "more choice and flexibility" to players. Interestingly, Google has since dismissed this explanation.

In response to Xbox’s statement, Google, as reported by The Verge, denied that the court ruling had caused any delay. The tech giant insisted that Xbox had always been able to offer game purchases directly through its Android app but had "simply chosen not to." Google also voiced concerns over the new court-mandated changes, arguing that they could compromise the "safe and secure experience" for Play Store users. Additionally, Google criticized both Microsoft and Epic Games for overlooking these "real security concerns."

Given that competitors like PlayStation and Steam have long allowed direct game purchases via their Android apps, Xbox's delay in offering the same functionality seems unusual. Meanwhile, Epic Games' legal battle with Google is expected to continue, with the focus shifting to another issue involving Samsung.
