Recent discoveries at Kurd Qaburstan, an ancient Mesopotamian site in northeast Iraq, are shedding new light on the Middle Bronze Age. Led by Tiffany Earley-Spadoni, an associate professor of history at UCF, the team uncovered culturally significant artifacts, including clay tablets with cuneiform writing, a game board, and large structural remains. These findings could provide invaluable insights into the city’s history and the broader narrative of Mesopotamia.

The clay tablets, the first of their kind found in the region, are currently being analyzed. Early interpretations suggest they contain information about the city’s inhabitants and the major events they experienced, offering a rare glimpse into their lives.

The site, situated in the Erbil region, lies in a historically significant area often regarded as the cradle of urban civilization. However, while southern Mesopotamian cities like Uruk are well-documented, the northern region, including Kurd Qaburstan, remains underexplored.

“We hope to uncover more records that tell the story of this city from the perspective of its own people rather than relying on accounts from their enemies,” says Earley-Spadoni. She notes that literacy and cultural identity in northern Mesopotamian cities have long been overlooked compared to the more studied southern cities.

Researchers have focused on two main areas: the northwest residential neighborhoods and a newly discovered administrative complex identified as a lower-town palace. Technologies like magnetometry, which reveals architectural layouts beneath the surface, have been instrumental in guiding excavations.

Excavations of the palace have unveiled monumental architecture, human remains, and evidence of destruction, hinting at a significant historical event. The researchers aim to establish the palace's characteristics and understand its role in the city’s administration.

Earley-Spadoni emphasizes the importance of studying everyday life in ancient cities, an area often overshadowed by excavations of palaces and temples. “We decided to investigate what it was like to be an ordinary person in a city during the Middle Bronze Age, nearly 4,000 years ago. This has been an understudied topic,” she explains.

The findings at Kurd Qaburstan not only enhance our understanding of regional history but also contribute to the global heritage of urban development in ancient Mesopotamia. By filling gaps in existing scholarship, these discoveries help paint a more comprehensive picture of life in the ancient world.
