The city is home to the largest zoo in Central Europe (288 hectares) and the largest Slovak botanical garden with the largest collection of cacti in the former Czechoslovakia. The children's railway in Čermeľské údolí is the oldest and only one in Slovakia.
The city is the seat of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic and the seat of the Košice Autonomous Region. As an independent legal entity, it is divided into 22 city districts. It has 34 primary and 63 kindergartens under its administration. The network of secondary schools consists of gymnasiums, vocational secondary schools and training schools, business academies, medical and art schools. The highest level of education is provided by 9 faculties of the Technical University in Košice, 5 faculties of the P.J. Šafárik University, the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy, and other workplaces of Slovak universities.
